The Art of the Slow Pour
There’s a particular type of evening that doesn’t get talked about enough. Not a dinner party. Not a big night out. Just you, a glass of wine you love and nowhere you need to be for the next hour.
We’ve become so good at doing things quickly. Scrolling quickly, eating quickly, even relaxing quickly - squeezing in twenty minutes of chill time before the next thing on your to do list. Somewhere in the rush, we forget to practise the art of just being with ourselves. That’s where the slow pour comes in.
When you pour a glass with the quiet intention of “this is my time”, something shifts. You sit differently, you breath a little slower. The glass in your hand becomes a cue - a signal to your nervous system that the day is done and this hour belongs to you. It doesn’t need to be a special bottle, it doesn’t need to be a Friday. it just needs to be chosen, not grabbed.
What happens when you slow down?
When you stop rushing through the evening, you start to notice things. The colour of the wine against the light, the thoughts that surface when you’re not busy drowning them out.
This is where a journal becomes more something more than a notebook.
Our Mindfulness Journal was designed for exactly this type of evening, Not for tasting notes or scores or technical observations - but for the quieter questions - how do I actually feel right now? What do I want more of? What am I holding onto that I could put down? There’s something about the combination of a glass of wine and a blank page that makes honesty feel easier. Lower defences. Softer edges. A version of yourself that’s a little more willing to tell the truth.
There's a particular type of evening that doesn't get talked about enough. Not a dinner party. Not a big night out. Just you, a glass of wine you love, and nowhere you need to be for the next hour.
Most of us are very good at “fast”. We eat at our desks, watch something with a phone in our other hand, and fit twenty minutes of "relaxing" in between the washing and tomorrow's to-do list. Even rest has become something we get through. Somewhere in all of that, we've lost the habit of simply being with ourselves for a while.
That's where the slow pour comes in.
It starts with a small decision. Instead of pouring a glass while you're cooking, or half-watching the news, you pour it on purpose. You put the phone in another room. You take the glass to your favourite chair, or the balcony, or the end of the couch. It doesn't need to be a special bottle, and it doesn't need to be a Friday. It just needs to be chosen, not grabbed.
What happens when you slow down?
Small things, mostly. You notice the colour of the wine against the last of the light. You smell it properly before the first sip. Your shoulders drop an inch without you telling them to, and you realise you've been holding them up near your ears since the morning!
And then, if you stay long enough, the quieter thoughts turn up. The ones that get crowded out during the day, when you're too busy to hear them. A conversation you keep replaying. Something you're looking forward to and hadn't admitted. A feeling you couldn't name at 3pm that suddenly has a name.
This is where a journal becomes something more than a notebook.
Our wine-themed Mindfulness Journal was made for exactly this kind of evening. It isn't for tasting notes or scores or technical observations. It's for the quieter questions: how do I actually feel right now? What do I want more of? What am I holding onto that I could put down? Each page opens with a mood check-in (are you feeling bubbly, bold, cloudy, or still fermenting?) and ends with a space to decant the day. With its gold-edged pages, hardback cover and ribbon marker, it's the kind of book you'll want to leave out, ready for the next slow pour.
You don't need a ritual or a perfect evening to try it. Just one glass, one hour, and a page to write on.
A simple ritual to try tonight
You don't need a plan. You just need:
A glass of whatever you enjoy
A few minutes without your phone
Your Mindfulness Journal
Pour the wine before you write. Smell it. Take a sip. Let yourself settle. Then ask yourself: what do I actually need right now?
Write without editing. The point isn't to produce something perfect, it's to notice something.
Slow evenings
They don't feel productive, and they don't need to. The only thing you'll have to show for them is a page in your journal. But they have a way of making everything else feel more manageable. More chosen. More yours.
Pour the glass. Open the journal. The rest can wait.
